How to convert MOV to GIF

  1. Drop the MOV file on the frame above. On an iPhone, tap Choose file and pick the video from Photo Library.
  2. Select the part you want. iPhone clips run long, so the tool starts with the first 10 seconds selected.
  3. Crop for where it’s going. A portrait iPhone video stays 9:16 unless you pick square or 4:5.
  4. Press Make GIF and download it, or tap Share to send it straight to Messages or another app.

iPhone and QuickTime videos

MOV is Apple’s video format. You get one from three places, mostly: the iPhone camera, QuickTime Player, and the Mac’s built-in screen recorder.

The catch is the codec inside. Since iOS 11 in 2017, iPhones can record in HEVC (H.265), and it’s the standard setting. Apple calls it High Efficiency and recommends it because the files take less space (Apple Support). Great for your storage. Less great for anything that has to read the file later, because not every browser decodes HEVC.

Safari on a Mac handles it. So does Chrome on a Mac. On Windows it depends on your graphics hardware, and Firefox only added it in version 134.

Then there’s rotation. Hold your iPhone upright and it usually still stores the frames sideways, with a mark in the file that says “rotate 90°”. Tools that ignore the mark give you a GIF lying on its side. This one applies it before anything else, so your crop and width work on the picture you actually see.

If your browser can’t open the MOV

You’ll see “Your browser can’t decode this video (hevc)” or similar. Three ways out, fastest first:

  • Switch browser. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on a Mac. Both decode HEVC.
  • Export as H.264 on a Mac. In QuickTime Player, choose File › Export As › 1080p, then pick Greater Compatibility (H.264) instead of the HEVC option. Drop the exported file here.
  • Change the iPhone setting for next time. Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible makes new videos H.264. Files get bigger, but every browser reads them.

FAQ

How do I convert an iPhone video to a GIF?

On the iPhone itself: open this page in Safari, tap Choose file, then Photo Library, and pick the video. Trim it, tap Make GIF, then Share to send or save it. On a computer: AirDrop or copy the video over and drop the file on the frame above.

Why won’t my MOV file open?

Almost always it’s HEVC, the codec iPhones record in by default, on a browser or computer that can’t decode it. The error message names the codec. Open the page in Safari or Chrome on a Mac, or export the clip as H.264 (see “If your browser can’t open the MOV” above).

Does it keep the right orientation?

Yes. Phones often store a portrait video sideways with a note saying “rotate 90°”. The tool reads that note, so a portrait video gives a portrait GIF and the crop options work on what you see, not on the stored frame.

Can I do this on a Mac without an app?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome and drop the MOV on it. Nothing to install, and the video stays on your Mac. Screen recordings you made with Shift-Command-5 are MOV files too, and they make very small GIFs because most of the screen stays still.
